Matters Of The Heart

Writer's picture: Dr. Sharon Johnson-EbyDr. Sharon Johnson-Eby

I came across a paper that I wrote while I was in grad school. It was about the heart. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the heart (shen) is affected by all of emotions. This is why it’s so important to keep the body and all of the organs well balanced and functioning optimally.

Emotions can affect each organ in the body and have an impact on the associated organs function.

Emotional Effects according to TCM

Emotion Effect

• Anger affects the liver

• Joy affects the heart

• Sadness affects the lungs and heart

• Worry affects the lungs and spleen

• Pensiveness affects the spleen

• Fear affects the kidneys

• Shock affects the heart

The heart ultimately holds the key to how a person interacts and reacts to both physical and psychological situations, stresors and events. The inability to communicate adequately, loss of control or inability to express the feelings and emotions efficiently, there will be blockages or stagnant energy (qi), which is sometimes expressed as illness, pain, nodules, masses or tumors , tension, stress, congestion and disharmony in the body.

This is why such great importance is placed upon determining the root cause of health issues at my clinic, Ān Medi-Zen. . In TCM ancient literature, ‘The Yellow Emperor “, it is suggested that all emotions are created, or birthed in the heart.

The theory is that the heart is the master, “mother” of all organs, and their associated emotions. The heart is responsible for maintaining overall balance

within the body, and influences homeostasis in the mind, body and spirit (shen).

The matters of the heart impact the emotional state, overall health and wellbeing. This is relevant in explaining why Acupuncturist are able to address mental wellness and can successfully treat anxiety, depression, restlessness, PTSD, and other emotional health disorders.

Mental health issues at it’s core or root is a matter of the heart. When the spirit/shen is anchored and well balanced, it’s ability to keep the entire mind, body, and spirit properly united and efficient, means the body is “healthy”. The definition of “healthy “is absence of pain, suffering and illness.

FUN FACT—-> maintaining good health, peace, calm, content, safe, tranquility = “Ān”

I do have a special request or call to action … please find some time for self care, if possible find time for nourishing the mind, body, and spirit (shen). Ideas for self-care, write or draw in your journal, go for a walk, meditate, take a nap, enjoy the sunshine, sing & dance, get a calming massage or treat yourself to an acupuncture session-

Do something that will address the real issues, what really matters to your heart, emotional wellness, happiness and health.

Yes, Acupuncture and many other holistic interventions and integrative health services can effectively help ease both physical and emotional pain, PTSD, relieve stress & anxiety, address depression and many other physical and emotional wellness issues.

In Ling Shu Chapter 8 it says: “For every needling, the

method is above all, not to miss the rooting of the spirit.”
